Volunteers needed for research study: Genetic variation and the effect of medicines on thinking processes Male? Aged 18 to 40? Help our research and receive £20 for your time. What’s it all about? We want to find out whether a drug called Reboxetine that has been used for many years to treat people with depression may also help to improve memory and attention and whether its effects may also be dependent on certain genes. Can I take part? YES if you • Are healthy, male and aged 18 to 40 • are White British* • speak English as your first language NO if you • are taking regular medication • have a history of alcohol or drug abuse • have a history of any psychiatric or neurological disorders, e.g., depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, dementia. • have any serious physical health problems (such as heart, liver, kidney or prostate disease) * we need this restriction because variations across different ethnic groups and gender may bias the results of the study What does it involve? • One 3 hour visit to the Sussex University Campus: you’ll be randomly allocated to take either a standard dose of the drug Reboxetine or a Placebo (Vitamin C) • we’ll also take a quick and easy cheek swab for genetic testing (we’re only interested in TWO genes) • you’ll then be free for an hour and a half before we begin testing • we’ll then get you to do some memory and attention tests and take a few measurements (pulse and blood pressure), then you’ll be free to go What’s in it for you?
